Barba Vasilis – Istanbul’s Authentic Greek Taverna & Restaurant

Barba Vasilis, is a small Greek taverna&restaurant, situated in the historical Balat district of Istanbul, in the ground floor of a boutique hotel, Troya Balat. The manager, Vasilis, born in Istanbul as a member of the local Greek minority, spent his life both in Turkey and Greece. After finally returning to Istanbul, his beloved city, Vasilis wanted to do what he loved most, and opened BrbaVasilis, in a district of Istanbul, Balat, where ‘Istanbullu’s (Istanbulers) from all ethnic backgrounds used to live, as well as a sizeable Greek minority. Soon after the opening, the Greek mezes, grilled octopuses, and other selected dishes which Vasilis cooked loyal to the heritage of the local Greek cuisine, had become a favorite of ‘Istanbullu’s.

Centrally Located in Istanbul, Close to Sultanahmet and Taksim

We are located in Balat district as mentioned above, in historical Istanbul, just a few kilometers to the well known centers like Sultanahmet, Taksim, and Eminonu. The building, came into being by combining four old identical Greek houses  and converting them into a hotel, which is the boutique Troya Balat Hotel now, at he beginning of 2000s. The part of the houses where the restaurant concides now, probably used to be the laundry and bath of the houses. Just behind the building is the historic Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul, and just accross is the magnificient blue waters of Haliç sea, or Golden Horn Sea. So, when you visit us, you can also spend time around the restaurant.
